Decades in Black traces the deep roots of resilience within CMU’s Black community that were planted by the first students who carved out belonging in spaces not built for them and strengthened by every generation that followed. Through organizations, performances, protests, and quiet acts of persistence, they formed networks of care, advocacy, and celebration that still support us today. Our resilience has never been just survival; it’s the ongoing act of shaping culture, claiming space, and uplifting one another in the face of change. Across these decades, we’ve learned that progress comes through connection – through the events, conversations, and initiatives that brought us closer. Our story shows that representation is not only about being seen, but about being valued, celebrated, and heard.
This project exists to honor the legacy of Black students, alumni, and organizations whose resilience, talent, and vision have shaped CMU. Decades in Black preserves these stories, amplifies the voices that built this community, and inspires new generations to continue writing our shared narrative. It’s both a reflection and a call to action. A reminder that we are part of something larger, and that every contribution adds to the legacy we carry. The next chapter belongs to the current and future generations of Black students. The innovators, artists, engineers, and leaders who are redefining what belonging looks like here. Our story is still unfolding, shaped by every project, performance, and act of care that continues the courage and creativity that started it all.
